Is the issue of the HPV shot promoting teens to become sexually active?...say whatt?!

I believe that cervical cancer vaccinations are not causing the rate of abstinence to decline, but are helping young women who need it most. America can’t stop teens from having sex, but being able to learn about things like this should be mandatory in sex education classes, and available to the American public.
Human papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted disease that is the cause of almost all cervical cancers. It effects women at a young age, and cannot be issued once the individual has had intercourse. Certain people want this to be mandatory for teens at a certain age, but the opposing views of the religious conservatives are insisting their own views towards the vaccination. They say that it will cause more young women to have sex, but instead of focusing on the health of the American public, they want to shove the idea of abstinence until marriage down our throats.
Don’t you think it seems fairly counterproductive if instead of embracing new medical breakthroughs in technology, we leave it in the dark for fear of offending others and sending the wrong information? I have a solution to the problems these religious conservatives fear. Sure, I believe that conservatives aren’t particularly off their rockers in refusing that the vaccination be mandatory; everyone should have a choice. However, it should be an option held open to all young women during checkups and school physicals. Advertisements and other marketing schemes should be used to inform young women that they should get this, without posing the sexual relations to HPV in a way which will offend others. It isn’t fair that the development of such a breakthrough drug is kept under wraps because of politics and religious views that don’t think it’s a good idea. The main focus should be the safety of young adults, and I think that’s everyone’s focus here.

  1. Very powerfully stated, Audrey. I could see your writing voice peeking out here. You did a great job of framing and then supporting your belief. Excellent work.
